In the late 1970s, the toy industry was hit by a massive, cosmic wave. Following the theatrical release of Star Wars in 1977, space-themed toys were virtually printing money. While Kenner dominated the market with action figures, Milton Bradley (MB Electronics) decided to conquer the spaceship market with a brilliant piece of pure tech: Star Bird.

Released in 1978, Star Bird wasn’t just a plastic spaceship; it was a pioneering marvel of electronic toy design.

Meet the Space Transport with Electronic Brains

Developed by Bing McCoy—the legendary toy designer who also created Electronic Battleship and the iconic ROM the Spaceknight—Star Bird was marketed as a “space transport with electronic circuitry”.

Unlike static plastic toys of the era, Star Bird used real-time movement sensors to deliver interactive feedback. To kids in 1978, it felt like magic.

The Physics of Play: The Gravity Sensor

Star Bird’s most famous feature was its reactive engine sound effects. When turned on, the toy emitted a low, pulsating hum.

  • Nose pointed UP: The engine noise roared, climbing in pitch to simulate a rocket launch or heavy acceleration.
  • Nose pointed DOWN: The hum slowed to a deep, decelerating growl, mimicking a landing approach or heavy braking.
  • Level flight: It maintained a steady, cruising electronic pulse.

This wasn’t done with complicated digital chips. Instead, McCoy utilized a remarkably simple analog solution: a tilt switch containing a rolling metal ball bearing. As the child tilted the ship, the ball would roll across contacts, shifting the frequency of the internal oscillator circuit to change the pitch of the speaker.

Modular Design: 3 Ships in 1

Star Bird’s plastic hull was cleverly designed to be disassembled and reconfigured on the fly, allowing kids to roleplay different stages of a space mission:

  1. The Star Bird (Transport): The fully assembled ship, featuring the front hull (cockpit), the main body with wings, and a removable rear engine booster.
  2. The Star Bird Fighter: By sliding the cockpit section off the main body and plugging the rear engine directly into the back of it, you created a smaller, more agile “dragster-style” starfighter.
  3. The Power Orbiter: The bare-bones cockpit shell stripped away, leaving a sleek, lightweight reconnaissance craft.

Additionally, the tips of the main wings housed detachable drone-like Interceptor ships, and the rear of the vehicle featured a rotating laser turret that could be detached entirely to act as an escape pod.

The Evolution: Avenger, Intruder, and Command Base

The success of the original toy led Milton Bradley to expand the line into a fully realized space ecosystem.

1. Star Bird Avenger (1979)

Many people mistakenly remember the original Star Bird as having built-in laser-tag capabilities. In reality, the 1978 original only made firing sounds and flashed its red LEDs when you pressed the firing button.

It was the Star Bird Avenger, released in 1979, that introduced infrared (IR) technology. The Avenger featured an IR emitter and receiver. It came packaged with a small cardboard target with a reflective foil shield. When fired at the target, the beam would bounce back; if the sensor caught the reflection, the ship would emit three victorious “whoop-whoop” sounds.

2. Star Bird Intruder (1980)

To facilitate true multiplayer space battles, Milton Bradley introduced the villain of the universe: the Star Bird Intruder.

Sporting a menacing black hull, a pistol grip, and a skull cockpit decal, the Intruder was designed for direct dogfighting against the Avenger. When an Avenger and an Intruder faced off, a successful hit from one’s IR beam to the other’s nose sensor would cause the victim ship’s engines to “sputter and die” before restarting a few seconds later.

3. Star Bird Command Base (1979)

For kids looking for a physical destination for their space travels, Milton Bradley released a massive cardboard Command Base playset. It included a launchpad, plastic console accessories, a crane, and small plastic astronaut figures to flesh out the Star Bird universe.

Collecting Star Bird Today

For toy collectors, finding an original Star Bird or Avenger in working condition is a holy grail. If you are hunting for one on the secondary market, keep these common issues in mind:

  • Missing Lasers: The tiny, twin plastic laser guns from the top turret are almost always missing, having been lost in shag carpets decades ago. Fortunately, 3D-printed replica parts are widely available online.
  • Battery Corrosion: Like many electronic toys from the era, Star Birds were often stored with their 9-volt batteries still inside, leading to severe terminal corrosion. Always ask for a battery-compartment photo before buying.
  • Stuck Tilt Sensors: Sometimes the internal metal ball in the tilt switch gets stuck or oxided over time, meaning the engine sound won’t shift pitch when tilted. This can sometimes be fixed with a gentle tap or some internal contact cleaner.
