BASEMENT BOOKSHELF: “American Ghost Stories: True Tales from All 50 States” by Michael A. Kozlowski

When it comes to books on ghosts and the paranormal, they really can be hit or miss. Whether fiction or non-fiction, the author has to be a good storyteller for the book to work. Author Michael A. Kozlowski is one of those good, no, make that great, storytellers.

I became very excited when I heard about “American Ghost Stories: True Tales from All 50 States” as it was being released in September, just in time for the Halloween season. With Halloween being my favorite holiday, I knew that this book would be a great addition to my celebration of all things spooky.

Collecting stories of phantoms and spirits, “American Ghost Stories: True Tales from All 50 States” takes a fright-filled tour across the country, visiting every state while digging up tales in graveyards, detouring through nightmarish back-road encounters, and finding apparent apparitions in houses, schools, and more. This spellbinding collection of ghost stories, haunted places, and first person encounters is guaranteed to add a lot to your Halloween season.

With more than 100 color photos, this fright-filled guide is richly illustrated, and its helpful bibliography lets you track down your own ghost tales. Whether of not you already believe in phantoms and spirits, this book might just make you a true believer.

What I enjoyed most about this book is the way it is set up. If you are like me, you like to read in bed before going to sleep. Each story is just a few pages long, making it a lot easier ending your reading for the night. I will say though, that as I finished each entry, it was very difficult not to start the next one right away. This book is hard to put to down and I found myself forcing myself to actually go to bed.

Michael’s writing style is also what makes this book a winner. He is able to draw you in to each and every story, making you want more. Though he doesn’t over explain each location, he gives you just enough information that makes you question what is really going on in this world. His storytelling style also makes you feel like he is talking directly to you, the reader. This makes the reading of this book all the more special.

At the time of this writing, Halloween is only three months away. Stores are starting to stock their Halloween merchandise and it is never to early to start thinking about your reading options for the Halloween season.
