As I’ve mentioned before, masks from the 1970s and 1980s by Don Post Studios were some of my favorites. They had a look that certainly made them stand out from other mask companies of the time. One mask, MUMMY 5,000, was one that I always wanted and by the time I actually was able to buy one, the quality of masks by Don Post Studios declined severely with thin pours and what looked like rushed paint jobs.

At some point, MUMMY 5,000 was re-imagined featuring a snake going into the ear cavities and coming out the mouth. I always thought this version was fun, but the original

MUMMY was always my favorite. Since the MUMMY mask I originally bought had long-since rotted away, it was very exciting to see that Trick or Treat Studios was releasing re-imagined versions of Don Post Studios masks (the above picture is of their production copy used online).

The 2024 re-imagining of the Snake Mummy was sculpted by Justin Mabry. I was very excited to receive this mask and upon opening the box, after enjoying the fresh smell of latex, realized that this mask was a wonderful tribute to a time long past in mask-making. The copies being sold, as you can see, look exactly like the production company. For those that have been collecting for awhile know that this is not always the case.

Like most masks from Trick or Treat Studios, I wish the latex was thicker but this is my only complaint. At least I am confident that it will last longer than the copy I actually got from Don Post Studios at the end of the company’s life. The size of the mask is perfect for adult wearing and your eyes fit perfectly into the eye holes. This adds a lot to the look of the mask when wearing.

When you really look closely at this mask you see how much detail is in it. Though a minor thought, I think some dry-brushing would help bring these textures out. This would probably add an increase in the selling price for the extra work. If you know how to paint latex masks, you may want to try this. I also thought the added detail of the Don Post stamp on the back of the mask was a nice touch. It was the 1982 release that I originally got from Don Post Studios.

This mask is a must-have for all Don Post collectors. I cannot recommend it enough and I hope Trick or Treat Studios keeps releasing these new versions of classics from yesteryear.
