The 2019 film Haunt is directed and written by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (the minds behind A Quiet Place). It is a thrilling and effective horror film. The movie takes a familiar sub-genre and injects it with fresh, relentless energy. While some critics have pointed out a few perceived flaws, the movie has largely been praised by audiences and horror fans for its straightforward approach, tense atmosphere, and visceral scares. It’s an excellent example of a movie that doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel. It remains highly entertaining and genuinely terrifying.

A Simple Premise, Solidly Executed

The film’s strength lies in its simplicity. A group of college friends looking for a good time on Halloween decide to visit a remote, unadvertised “extreme” haunted house. What starts as a fun, spooky night quickly devolves into a desperate fight for survival as they realize the masks and gore are all too real. Haunt doesn’t waste time with unnecessary exposition or convoluted plot twists. It gets right to the point, building a sense of dread and claustrophobia as the characters navigate the sinister maze. The set design is a major highlight, with each room offering a new, creative, and often brutal, challenge.

A Relatable Protagonist šŸŽ¬

One of the film’s most compelling elements is its protagonist, Harper, played by Katie Stevens. Her character isn’t a typical “final girl” archetype. Instead, she’s a person dealing with a history of an abusive relationship. The film weaves this trauma into the narrative. It shows how her past experiences have given her a reluctant strength. This strength and resilience are tested throughout the night. This emotional grounding makes her a more relatable and engaging character to root for, transforming the film from a simple slasher into a story about overcoming personal demons, both metaphorical and literal.

Relentless Tension and Gory Payoffs

While Haunt is not a film that relies solely on jump scares, it certainly knows how to use them effectively. The real horror comes from the constant, nail-biting tension. The film plays on primal fears, from claustrophobia to the unsettling nature of masked figures and the fear of the unknown. When the violence does occur, it’s brutal, bloody, and impactful. The filmmakers don’t shy away from the gore, but it never feels gratuitous. Each kill feels earned, and it heightens the stakes for the characters who remain.

A Modern Horror Gem

For fans of classic slashers and modern horror alike, Haunt is a hidden gem. It’s a testament to the power of a well-executed premise, strong direction, and an immersive atmosphere. It’s the kind of film that’s perfect for a Halloween movie marathon, delivering on its promise of an exhilarating and terrifying experience. The film’s success on streaming services like Shudder has proven that it has found a dedicated audience that appreciates its lean, mean, and chilling approach to the haunted house sub-genre. It’s a clear reminder that sometimes, the simplest scares are the most effective.
