In an era where the vampire subgenre can often feel as drained as its victims, J.J. Perry’s 2022 directorial debut, DAY SHIFT, arrives as a shot of pure, high-octane adrenaline. Starring Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco, this Netflix original isn’t just another monster movie. It is a masterclass in action choreography. DAY SHIFT serves as a vibrant love letter to 80s buddy-cop films. It also offers a refreshingly blue-collar take on supernatural lore.

A Working-Class Hero in the San Fernando Valley

At the heart of DAY SHIFT is Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx). He is a man whose life is far less glamorous than your typical cinematic vampire hunter. Operating under the sun-drenched, smoggy skies of the San Fernando Valley, Bud disguises his true profession as a pool cleaner. Foxx delivers a grounded, charismatic performance as a father fighting not for ancient vengeance, but for school tuition and dental bills. This “blue-collar” approach to monster hunting makes Bud one of the most relatable protagonists in recent action history.

The Vision of J.J. Perry: Stunt-First Cinema

Director J.J. Perry is a veteran stunt coordinator. He is known for his work on the John Wick and Fast & Furious franchises. He brings a “stunt-first” philosophy to the film. This approach is palpable in every frame. Many modern blockbusters rely on shaky-cam and rapid cuts. They use these techniques to hide lackluster choreography. In contrast, Perry’s camera is steady and confident.

The action sequences are breathtaking, particularly the use of contortionists to play the vampires. Their eerie, bone-snapping movements provide a fresh visual language for the undead, making them feel genuinely predatory and alien.

The Iconic Duo: Foxx and Franco

The chemistry between Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco is the film’s secret weapon. Franco plays Seth, a desk-bound union representative who is forced into the field to shadow the “excommunicado” Bud.

  • The Odd Couple Dynamic: Seth is a rule-follower. He literally urinates in fear during his first encounter. Bud, on the other hand, is the grizzled veteran. He ignores every protocol in the book.
  • Character Growth: Watching their relationship evolve from mutual annoyance to genuine brotherhood is satisfying. This evolution provides a strong emotional anchor amidst the carnage.

World-Building and “The Union”

DAY SHIFT excels at building a secret world hidden in plain sight. The idea of a Vampire Hunters Union adds a layer of satirical humor to the film. It includes bureaucracy, health benefits, and strict codes of conduct.

  • Vampire Classes: The film introduces a hierarchy of vampires (Southerns, Easterns, Spiders, and Ubers), each with distinct traits and “fang values.”
  • Creative Weaponry: From garlic-infused grenades to UV-light shotguns and silver-wire decapitation traps, the film delights in the “tools of the trade.”

Snoop Dogg as the Ultimate Legend

No discussion of DAY SHIFT is complete without mentioning Snoop Dogg’s turn as Big John Elliott. Snoop is dressed like a cosmic cowboy. He wields a massive multi-barrel machine gun named “Big Bertha.” Snoop steals every scene he is in. His presence elevates the film from a standard action flick to a cult classic. This performance culminates in one of the most cheer-worthy action sequences in the final act.

A Visual Feast of Summer Heat

Visually, the film diverges from the traditional “dark and moody” vampire trope. Cinematographer Toby Oliver captures a “hot L.A. vibe,” using a saturated, golden palette that makes the San Fernando Valley feel alive. The bright, blistering sun contrasts with the dark, “aggressively air-conditioned” vampire nests. This creates a unique atmosphere. It feels both modern and nostalgic.

Final Verdict: The New Standard for Popcorn Cinema

DAY SHIFT is a rare gem that knows exactly what it wants to be: a loud, proud, and incredibly fun action-comedy. It respects its audience by delivering top-tier practical effects. The film also showcases inventive world-building. Importantly, it never loses sight of the human story at its core. If you are looking for a film that balances heart, humor, and high-stakes horror, Day Shift is a mandatory watch.
