Breaking the Curse: A Thrilling Ride with THE WINDIGO (2024)

When it comes to movies, I’ve learned to disregard film reviews. I remind myself that reviews are subjective and based on individual opinions that may not align with mine. Approaching movies with an open mind often enhances my enjoyment of them.

The 2024 film THE WINDIGO came as a pleasant surprise to me. I hadn’t heard any buzz or read any opinions about it, so watching it without any preconceived notions allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience. Watching movies without prior knowledge is when I find the most enjoyment, and this was certainly the case with THE WINDIGO.

The story revolves around an ancient Chippewa demon, the Windigo, brought back to life by a Native American teenager and his grandmother to protect their family from dangerous meth dealers in the backwoods. However, they soon realize that the creature’s bloodlust is uncontrollable. As the teen and the Windigo become increasingly intertwined through each killing, the family must find a way to break the curse before becoming the creature’s next victims.

THE WINDIGO is a film that warrants multiple viewings. The characters are compelling, and you find yourself rooting for their survival while also wishing demise upon the villains. Ry, the bullied teenager, is particularly sympathetic as he navigates not only the torment of bullies but also the protective instincts of his sister.

The film’s pacing is well-executed, quickly introducing the terrifying yet captivating Windigo. The practical effects add to the creature’s believability, offering a refreshing departure from over-reliance on CGI. The cinematography, especially the use of lighting and shadows, enhances the eerie atmosphere. The Windigo is portrayed in such a way that encountering it in person would be truly terrifying.

The family’s journey to sever the connection between Ry and the Windigo is a gripping narrative arc, highlighting their resourcefulness in the face of an indifferent sheriff. THE WINDIGO delivers on entertainment value and is best enjoyed in a dark setting for maximum thrills.
