Welcome back to OFF THE RACK COMICS! We’ve explored UFO comics before. Specifically, in April 2020, I discussed Gold Key Comics’ “UFO Flying Saucers”. I also talked about the Whitman reprint series “UFO & Outer Space.” Thanks to a sharp-eyed reader, I recently learned about two more reprint collections: “UFO Encounters” and “UFO Mysteries.”

It appears there were three volumes in total. The first, “UFO Encounters,” contained 128 pages and sold for $1.00. The second, “UFO Mysteries,” had 96 pages and also cost $1.00. Finally, a third edition was simply titled “UFO Encounters” without an issue number. It compiled the previous two titles into a 229-page book. The price was $1.95.

These collections were released in 1978 and were the size of standard comic books, but with thicker covers. Interestingly, the covers featured painted artwork originally used for the “UFO Flying Saucers” series. The cover art for the 128-page “UFO Encounters” matches that of “UFO Flying Saucers” #13 (January 1977). The “UFO Mysteries” cover is the same as “UFO Flying Saucers” #1 (October 1968). The origin of the artwork for the standalone 229-page “UFO Encounters” is unclear. Its style is more science fiction-esque. This suggests it may be from a different series entirely.

The painted covers, like those on the original series, are quite striking. Sadly, as was common practice at the time, no artist credits were given for either the covers or the interior artwork. This is a shame because both are excellent. I often wonder about the fate of the original paintings used for the “UFO & Outer Space” covers. They were beautifully done. They certainly caught the eye on the comic rack.

If you’re interested in these collections, they can still be found, but patience is key when purchasing. On eBay, prices can vary significantly, from reasonable to over $100 per volume. If a mint condition copy isn’t a priority, lower-grade copies offer better value. You can also find other sellers through online searches.

These collections are a fantastic way to experience all the UFO stories. They were originally published by Gold Key Comics between 1968 and 1977. This is especially true if you’re a fan of the series.
