For decades, the true identity of the boy behind the most famous horror story in history was a closely guarded secret. Both the Catholic Church and the literary world withheld this information. The real individual, previously known only by the pseudonyms “Roland Doe” and “Robbie Mannheim,” was finally revealed in 2021. He was identified as Ronald Edwin Hunkeler (June 1, 1935 – May 10, 2020).
Hunkeler’s life was a study in profound contrasts. He spent his childhood at the center of a terrifying religious drama. In his adulthood, he contributed to the pinnacle of human scientific achievement at NASA.

Early Life and the “Possession” of 1949
Ronald Hunkeler was born into a German-American Lutheran family in Cottage City, Maryland. He was an only child. He was notably close to his Aunt Tillie (Harriet). She was a spiritualist who introduced him to the Ouija board.
Following Tillie’s death in January 1949, the 13-year-old Ronald began experiencing what his family described as poltergeist activity. The reported phenomena included:
- Physical Manifestations: Scratching sounds in the walls, furniture moving on its own, and Ronald’s bed shaking violently.
- Skin Markings: Red welts and scratches appeared on his body, often forming words like “LOUIS” (which the family interpreted as a sign to go to St. Louis) or “HELL.”
- Behavioral Changes: Ronald would enter trances, speak in guttural voices, and react with extreme violence toward sacred objects.

The Exorcism in St. Louis
In March 1949, the Hunkeler family traveled to St. Louis to seek help from relatives and the Jesuit community at St. Louis University. The ritual of exorcism was led by Father William Bowdern, assisted by Father Raymond Bishop and Father Walter Halloran.
The process was grueling, lasting several weeks and involving over 20 separate sessions. Much of the ritual took place at the Alexian Brothers Hospital. During these sessions, Ronald reportedly:
- Broke Father Halloran’s nose with a well-aimed punch.
- Screamed profanities and spoke in Latin (a language he had not studied).
- Was finally “cleansed” on April 18, 1949, after a vision of St. Michael the Archangel, at which point he reportedly said, “He’s gone.”

A Secret Career at NASA
After the events of 1949, Hunkeler sought a life of absolute anonymity. He moved back to the East Coast, excelled in his studies, and eventually became a highly successful NASA engineer.
His contributions to the space program were significant:
- Apollo Missions: He worked at the Goddard Space Flight Center during the 1960s, contributing to the missions that eventually put a man on the moon.
- Patented Technology: Hunkeler held patents for technology related to extreme heat resistance, specifically materials that helped space shuttle panels withstand the intense temperatures of atmospheric reentry.

The Burden of the Secret
Despite his professional success, Hunkeler lived in constant fear that his past would be discovered. He never discussed the exorcism with colleagues and was reportedly terrified of the 1973 film The Exorcist, which was based on the diaries of the priests who treated him.
His longtime companion later revealed that Ronald would leave his home every Halloween, fearing that “truth-seekers” or the media would find him. Interestingly, in his later years, he expressed skepticism about his own “possession,” allegedly telling his partner, “I was just a bad boy,” and attributing the events to a combination of grief and a desire for attention.

Death and Revelation
Ronald Hunkeler died of a stroke on May 10, 2020, just a month before his 85th birthday. His identity remained a secret until an investigation by The Skeptical Inquirer and the New York Post in late 2021 linked his real name to the “Roland Doe” case.
In a final, eerie twist, his companion noted that although Ronald was not religious in his later life, a Catholic priest arrived unannounced at his home to perform last rites just before he passed away—despite no one in the house having called for one.
