One of the biggest cinematic surprises of 2026 is Obsession, a supernatural psychological horror film that transformed a shoestring $750,000 budget into a massive $377 million global phenomenon. Written, directed, and edited by 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker, the film marks a historic transition from viral YouTube horror to a mainstream box-office juggernaut, backed by Focus Features and Blumhouse Productions.

From YouTube Shorts to a TIFF Record-Breaker

Before shaking up the global box office, director Curry Barker built his reputation on the YouTube channel That’s a Bad Idea, culminating in his microbudget debut Milk & Serial (2024), which garnered millions of views online.

When offered a deal to expand his viral horror short The Chair into a feature film, Barker instead pitched a completely original concept: Obsession, a deeply twisted psychological love story partially inspired by The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror II.”

Shot in Los Angeles over the course of just one month in late 2024, the film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It instantly triggered an intense Hollywood bidding war. Focus Features ultimately acquired the distribution rights for a staggering $14 million to $15 million—the highest price ever paid for a genre film in TIFF history—with horror titan Jason Blum joining as an executive producer.

The Plot: “Be Careful Who You Wish For”

On its surface, Obsession plays like a modern romance, but it quickly devolves into a dark, claustrophobic nightmare about control and consequences.

The story follows Baron “Bear” Bailey (Michael Johnston), a timid and deeply insecure music store employee who harbors a massive crush on his co-worker, Nikki Freeman (Inde Navarrette). After a night out where Nikki gently presses Bear about his feelings, he nervously denies them. Desperate to win her over, Bear visits a local crystal shop and purchases a novelty toy called a “One Wish Willow,” which supposedly grants a single wish when snapped.

Bear breaks the willow, wishing for Nikki to fall completely in love with him.

The next day, the wish seemingly works. Nikki is suddenly affectionate, attentive, and entirely focused on Bear. However, the supernatural influence quickly curdles into a violent, inescapable fixation. Nikki’s love morphs into hyper-possessive, terrifying obsession, stripping her of her actual identity. Rather than relying on standard jump scares, Barker derives the horror from watching a romantic fantasy systematically deform into a gruesome psychological hostage situation.

Cast and Key Characters

The movie’s tension relies heavily on its tight-knit ensemble cast:

Themes: A Modern Critical Lens

What truly elevated Obsession from a standard popcorn horror flick to a cultural talking point is its sharp commentary on modern dating culture.

“The film explores themes of unhealthy relationships, emotional control, and the dark reality of male entitlement, examining what happens when someone tries to bypass mutual consent and manipulate another person’s feelings.”

Critics have praised the narrative’s ability to spark intense online debate over who the true “victim” is at any given moment, masterfully exposing the toxic core of the “nice guy” trope. The horror hits incredibly close to home because it is grounded in real-world relationship anxieties.

Box Office Triump and Digital Unrated Cut

Released theatrically in the United States on May 15, 2026, Obsession shattered studio expectations. Benefiting from rampant word-of-mouth and a prolonged 45-day exclusive theatrical window usually reserved for major blockbusters, it went on to become Focus Features’ highest-grossing movie of all time.

Holding a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, it currently stands as the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2026 globally.

For fans looking to experience the film at home, Obsession made its Premium Video-on-Demand (PVOD) debut on digital platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video on June 30, 2026. The digital release features a highly anticipated Unrated Cut, restoring over 10 minutes of intense, graphic footage and character sequences that were originally trimmed to avoid an NC-17 theatrical rating. A physical release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD is slated for July 14, 2026, with a streaming release on Peacock expected shortly after.
